AFRB Rating System

AFRB Rating System

In leu of the MPAA's rating system, the American Film Ratings Board presents a new standard film ratings that give viewers an idea of a film's content as well as context.

Here is the AFRB's two part rating system:

Part 1: Content as it is appropriate to age. By the age listed, the viewer should be mature enough to watch a film and understand it's basic content. This number is based upon the ingredients that make up a film, including visual imagery, audio, character, story and dialouge.

Part 2: Maturity of Context. Context is based on an A - E scale, A being the most basic and E requiring the most comprehension and life experience. Context is defined as the way in which a film is constructed and framed. This includes external life experiences and understanding the viewer may need to bring to the film.

A - Context is something you will easiy understand
B - Context is something you will learn with minimal effort
C - Understanding of context requires research
D - Understanding of context requires previous knowledge of other subjects
E - Context will not be fully understood without extensive knowledge of other subjects, research and the ability to synthesize information

Example: If a film is rated 13B the averege American will not understand the film's content fully until they are 13. The film will have a somewhat complex context that the averege American will understand after minimal life experience and thought.

*This film rating's system is flexible. It is possible to have a 30A film and a 5E film.

Parental Notification

Parental Notification

The AFRB feels, personally, that all children 14 years old and under shold have adult supervision when viewing any film, regardless of raiting. Creating a dialouge between adults and children about a film's context is the proper way to enjoy and expand the art form. As parents, it's good to ask your children periodic questions about a film's content, story and plot, as film ads to social context and realative information for growth.
